My Dad's Ice Box

Here is my special Tuesday Treasure, my step father ice box from when he was a little boy, it gives me such joy, my dad died 17 years ago and this is one of the thing's he gave me. My mother hung on to for along time,I think she had a hard time letting go of it. When it came into my possion I would look at it and think, "Gosh, they had to buy a block of ice and put salt on it, we have so easy today" I know the ice box use to have milk, real butter, egg's, cause the family where Portuguese and they had a dairy then. I'm sure food was put in there with love cause it's a feeling I get, but I'm sure the door's got slammed allot as well. I feel so blessed to have something that once belong to a man that raised me as his own, I know if his family knew I had the ice box they'd throw a fit over it, so thank you Gilbert for allowing me to own this, I cherish it with all my heart like the love you had for me as well. I tell my children,"If the house catches fire, make sure you take all the picture's you can get, and my ice box!" So again I share my spacial treasure with all of you, and I love you Gilbert!!

very sweet story! i had to chuckle at the end.....i've said the same thing to my family about the fire and the pictures...(since i have no ice box) :) i used the term ice box even after i was married...and we never actually had an ice box when i was growing up. i believe my parents probably used that term in our home and it stuck....my husband was the one who actually made me aware that we did not have an ice box...we had a refrigerator.

I guess I've never seen an authentic ice box before...and I don't remember it being around when we were kids...but I think it's very interesting and I'm happy that you have it. I've often refered to our refrigerator as an ice box and even a fridger because that's what Kristin always called it when she was little.

Lovely ice box and how fortunate for you that you have it in your house. I remember when they closed the ice house down here in my home town. I only made a couple of visits to the ice house to get ice but not for the ice box... for the ice cream freezer. Man, that place was cold! Having that family ice box is a true treasure! Thanks for showing it.
